CARNIVOROUS PLANTS

Carnivorous plants are meat-eaters. They grow in boggy places where the soil is not very good and the minerals they need in order to grow well are in short supply. The plants use their leaves to catch and kill insects which give them more of the necessary minerals. They have invented some amazing ways to spice up their diet !

Pitcher Plants 

The pitcher plant’s leaves take the shape of deep containers where pools of water collect. Insects are attracted to the plant by its bright colouring, strong smell, or by nectar secreted around the rim of the pitcher. But hey often lose their footing on the slippery rim of the pitcher and fall into the water and drown. They gradually dissolve into a kind of insect broth which the plant digests .

Sundews 

Sundews have bright red leaves covered with hairs which produce a sweet sticky liquid. When an insect lands its feet get stuck to some of the hairs on the leaf. The nearby hairs bend toward the insect, surround it and suffocate it so that it can be digest .

Butterworts 

The glistening, golden leaves of the butterwort are a deadly glue trap. They produce a sticky substance which traps the insects when they land. But no matter how hard they struggle, the leaf edges curls inwards and the butterwort begin its lunch !

Venus Flytraps 

The leaves of the Venus flytrap have a hinge right down the central vein and long sharp teeth along the edges. They have special hairs that are sensitive to the slightest pressure. When an insect lands on a lead and touches at least two of these hairs – SNAP ! The leaf closes on the insect in less than a second. When it has captured something, the trap stays closed for about a week, while the plant slowly digests its victim with its digestive juices. Cây gọng vó

Cây gọng vó có lá màu đỏ tươi được bao trùm bởi loại lông tiết ra chất dịch ngọt và dính. Khi một con côn trùng nhỏ hạ cánh, chân của nó bị mắc kẹt vào 1 số ít lông trên lá. Các lông còn lại dồn về phía con côn trùng nhỏ, bao quanh và làm ngạt nó để hoàn toàn có thể tiêu hóa .

Cây cỏ bơ

Những chiếc lá vàng lấp lánh lung linh của cây xanh bơ là một cái bẫy dính chết người. Chúng tạo ra một thứ chất dính để bẫy côn trùng nhỏ hạ cánh. Dù đám côn trùng nhỏ có vùng vẫy thế nào, những rìa lá vẫn cuộn vào lại và cây cối bơ sẽ khởi đầu bữa ăn của mình .

For hundreds of years, if someone wanted to know about a fact, understand an idea, or expand their general knowledge, they would consult an encyclopedia. Encyclopedias were, and are, a very valuable resource, but a printed encyclopedia is not without its drawbacks. Printed encyclopedias are expensive and large, as well as slow to be update. In response to these problems, visionary digital publishers Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger set out to create a new encyclopedia. And any changes to controversial articles are restricted. Nonetheless, researchers never rely on Wikipedia as their only source of information.

The job of hosting and funding the Wikipedia website is taken care by the Wikipedia Foundation, a non-profit organization based in San Francisco. To pay for the cost of running they computers, the foundation asks for donations from the public. It depends on these donations because Wikipedia does not allow advertising on its page. Many wealthy groups, as well as ordinary individuals, have given large sums to help the website cover it costs. In 2010, Wikipedia received over 15 million dollar in donations .
